Constructing Opportunities in Construction for the Next Generation

When I met with my careers officer in 1996, he set out various career options.  They consisted of the following: Bookkeeper, Beautician, Administrator, Nurse (which required a degree).

Whilst I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to do, I knew I did not want to do any of those.

University was out of the question for me as I had no access to funding. Also, I did not meet the entry requirements to start the necessary pre-university qualifications – I had not acquired a single credible grade (except for science) but more on that later.

To cut an exceptionally long story short, I went to my local college and opted for a computer-based diploma and my career evolved from there.

Reflection

As I reflect on those earlier years, it raises two key questions for me:

  • Why did I do well at science, since I didn’t particularly enjoy dissecting a bull’s eye or a sheep’s liver (especially given that I am a vegetarian)?
  • Why were the options available so narrow?

The answer to the first question is both remarkably simple and extremely important, and the inspiration behind Construction Futures: the reason I did well in science is because my teacher, Mrs Torr, took a personal interest in my progress and future. Consequently, I didn’t want to let her down. Therefore, despite my lack of interest, I gave science my best effort.  This made me realise what an incredible difference it can make when you have the support and guidance you need to progress.

The answer to the second question is that a girl working in construction was unheard of back then and while things have changed a lot since 1996, thankfully, I have no doubt that it would not be a consideration for many, even now.

The truth is the career options and opportunities within construction are unlimited for anyone who wants to commit their best efforts and that is why we created the ‘Constructing Futures’ incentive.

The Constructing Futures Scholarship

Constructing Futures is our commitment to supporting, mentoring, and financing selected young adults (some from extremely challenging backgrounds) for a fantastic career and future in construction.

The KJT scholarship will include:

  • Full university funding for a construction-based degree
  • Extensive mentoring and support throughout the period of study and beyond
  • Work experience opportunities
  • Support securing employment following successful completion of studies

Career Opportunities Include, but are not limited to:

  • Quantity Surveyor
  • Building Surveyor
  • Site Manager
  • Electrician
  • Plumber
  • Designer
  • Project Manager
  • Crane Driver
  • BIM/CAD Specialist

We will be working with Academies across the country to deliver the selection process for 2021.

Here at KJT, we are passionate about giving back, both to youngster’s careers and the environment. This passion is facilitated through two incentives, which are Constructing Futures and The Lake District Protection Society.

The Lake District Protection Society

The Lake District Protection Society was founded by K Taylor with an aim to preserve and protect The Lake District National Park for habitats, wildlife, nature, and the environment.

To achieve its goal, the LDPS will establish trusted partnerships with organisations and individuals that feel as fiercely passionate about the preservation of this beautiful wilderness. LDPS will achieve its ambition by procuring and securing designated protected areas within the Lake District National Park. Once secured, the conservation team will seek innovative efficient ways to preserve and restore habitats and environments throughout the park.

In addition to securing the land portfolio that will help deliver their mission, the team will compile and implement some of the most crucial and advanced training and mentoring for futures generation who together, will become the future custodians for the national park.

Together we can help mother nature by giving her space and the protection she needs to grow and thrive.
